博弈

写作考试就好像一次“博弈”。在写作考试中,考生是真正拥有最多信息的人,考官仅仅只能被动地接受你所给的信息,即考生是出招的人,考官是接招的人。考官永远不知道哪些话你会说,哪些话不会说。所以,作文中遣词造句时请切记两点:一、不会说的请不要说,只说自己会说的;二、经典句一定要用上,因为这会让阅卷人“认为”你的文章语言质量不错。

得分技巧分析

四、六级作文在准备和对策上基本一致,因为两者评分标准基本一致(除了字数上的差距:四级120词,六级150词)。英语考试的作文大多可分为:1、正反论证;2、原因现象描述类;3、图表;4、名言谚语。所谓的书信作文,无非就是在这四类的基础上,套用信件的格式而已。

下面笔者就对以上5点在应试作文中的应用展开具体说明:

第一、 卷面整洁,书写清楚。 由于写作属于主观题型,故考官将依据主观印象进行评判。卷面的好坏将在第一时间冲击考官对你作文的印象。所以,建议各位考生先想清楚后动笔,减少涂改几率,让考官能清楚无误地看清你答卷的内容。另外,新的四、六级考试中会有部分考区的试卷被扫描至电脑,这些考区的考官将会在电脑前批阅作文,因此考生们最好使用黑色水笔做答,以保证扫描效果。

写作的格式有两种:齐头式(full block form)和缩进式(indented form)。采用齐头式,要求所有段落的首行都在左边顶格,段落中间空行;缩进式则要求每段首行缩进4~5个字母。笔者在此推荐齐头式格式,因为这样会让卷面看上去更整洁。另外,字写得大且端正,可显得文章清楚,也可以弥补字写得不好的缺点。

第二、 构思简单,少犯错误。 请大家一定记住,外语作文不是考查考生的思维水平或逻辑分析能力,而是考查语言表达能力。所以建议大家尽量简化自己的思维,即降低自己的思维水平来迎合自己有限的语言状况。仍请记住,不会说的话不要说,或换简单的方式表达简单的想法,这样也能避免犯错误。比如,要表达这个东西不贵,大家可以说:it is inexpensive,也可以说:it is cheap,或者it does not cost me much money。但无论用哪种表达尤其是复杂的表达,请一定要避免简单但严重的错误。如:单复数、主谓一致、时态、搭配和简单词的拼写。四、六级是淘汰式考试,而不是择优考试。因此这些错误的出现就标志着语言的基本素养不到位。另外,我们应该避免陷入“用大词用长句才算写作”的误区。文章写完后,主要检查句子中的主谓是否搭配得当,名词是否处理得当。

第三、 中心突出,层次分明。 从近几年的四级考试作文看来,尽管实用性提高了,但行文大多可以套用“中心句+1、2、3”模式。即每段第一句是topic sentence,改编自该段相对应的提纲,后面的1、2、3是衔接词,每个1、2、3后接分支观点。这种表达,中心突出,层次分明,同时也节省了考生构思的时间。衔接词是文章逻辑关系的体现,所以可以尽可能多地使用。比如,表示“起”的过渡词:nowadays, at present, first of all, firstly;表示“承”的过渡词: second, besides, moreover, furthermore, obviously, in addition, in other words;表示“转”的过渡词:however, on the other hand, but, instead, conversely;表示“合”的过渡词:therefore, so, as a result, in short, in brief, in a word, in conclusion等等。

下文为2006年6月新四级考试中的一篇范文。划线部分与斜体部分则体现了第三点所讲的全部内容。提纲如下:

There is a general discussion about the issue of some changes on campus. Particularly, students in universities can now choose their teachers.

第五、 重在变化,宁简勿滥。 作文考试评卷中,大多采用加分原则。“难词长句”不是加分的必然。关键在于变化,变化不分难易,只要有变化就行。一般说来,用在作文中的变化分为,词的变化和句的变化。在用词上,同一文章中相同意义的词要争取不断地用近义词替换,以显示出文章用词灵活。例如文中出现3次“毕业生”,不妨用3个同类词替换:graduates, the students, the young men。在用句上,不一定要用大的从句,主要避免相邻句子和句式太过一致即可。句子变化可体现在采用被动句、转折句、并列句、插入语等简单易行的方面。

写长法(length approach)是广东外语外贸大学王初明教授在一项英语写作教学改革会上提出的。其原则是以设计切合外语学习特点的任务为语境,以激发写作冲动的任务刺激交际需要,以课堂集体评阅优秀习作或写前讨论的方式加强语言使用的交流互动,通过调节作文长度要求,逐步加大语言运用量,使学生在表达真情实感的过程中,冲破外语学习的极限状态,从而获取学习成就感,提高自信心,在积极情感的配合下,将语言知识加速打造成外语运用能力。与传统写作不同的是,“写长法”关注的是学生的学习情感,重视写作任务设计,让师生共同参与写作评价,看中的不光是作文中的错误地方,而是以作文中有哪些优点为主。这种开放式的写作方法有助于克服学生畏惧写作的情绪,帮助他们更好地参与写作,真正转变写作课中以老师讲课光将不练的“以教师为中心”的写作模式,而成为“以学生为中心”的写作教学模式。

二、四六级写作存在问题

大学英语四六级考试旨在考察学生听说读写译几个方面的综合能力以及运用英语的能力。而现在中国整个外语界流行的所谓的“重说轻写”的现状使得学生更多地重视口语表达能力和口头交际能力而非写作能力。最经常出现的情况是甚至有些学生基础不错,语法知识也较完善,或者词汇积累量也不错,如果是光做选择填空题会答对,或单纯考词汇也会考得不错,可在写作时却不可避免地出现各种低级语法错误,并且积累的词汇没有得到很好地发挥。比如对于学生四六级写作这一部分而言,主要存在以下问题:

由此可见,学生在写作方面主要存在以上几个方面的问题,并不是学生基础有多差,而是平时练习得少,并没有注意到写作中的一些低级语法错误,或者并没有想到把更高级的词汇短语来替换写作中的一些简单词组。在表达技巧方面,也不太擅长运用插入语,被动,倒装之类的技巧。

三、实验研究

为了将“写长法”引用到写作实践中,刘老师将在湖北商贸学院预备参加四、六级考试的大二学生中进行写作教学实验。研究对象为14财管本2和14行管本1的两个班级79名学生,分别在14行管本1班实行写长法和同伴互评写作训练:拟在网络上(QQ/微博/微信)上发表周记后由同伴互评(实验组),在14财管本2班实行传统的学生写作→教师批阅→学生背诵范文训练(对照组)。

具体实施步骤:首先,14行管本1的学生参与到写长法和同伴互评的写作训练中,要求学生每周在班级QQ群里发一篇周记。写作长度100字数起步,不限制长度;逐步递增。接下来,在具体布置周记任务上,集思广益,征求学生意见,题材可以选学生感兴趣的话题,这样学生有动力,有兴趣去写。然后,老师和学生共同参与评阅周记,不仅指出刘丽媛校级课题有哪些错误,更点出周记哪些地方写得好,以及哪些方面可以修改完善写得更好。最后,采用百分制的评分标准,根据师生共同意见进行打分。

四、教学效果

经过一学期的对比训练,在14级学生参加大学英语四六级考试后针对学生在写作部分的成绩,将两个班级学生的成绩做了一个对比,发现参与“写长法”的14行管本1学生在写作部分的得分普遍高于14财管本2的学生。其优势主要是体现在,词汇的斟酌,高级词汇的运用和避免低级语法错误方面。而且大部分14行管本1的学生反映他们写作速度有大幅度提高,之前每次写作时间不够的情况改善了,在心理上也不畏惧写作。所以从某种程度而言,“写长法”做到了以量求质,从学生情感出发,以开放式的任务写作提升学生写作水平。

五、结语

面对我国大学英语写作教学现状,我们急需改进现行的教学法。英语写作教学实践应该尝试或引入新的教学思路和方法。为了应对这一新形势,写作教学实践需要更新理念,在教学方法和步骤上尝试新方法,这些应是每个英语教师深思的问题。顺应时代的要求,“写长法”开辟了作文训练的新天地,并在提高学习者的语言运用能力方面起到了积极作用,值得大力推广。
