Getting Ourselves Worked Up

Our capacity to cope successfully with lifes challenges far outstrips our capacity to feel nervousness. Yet in the weeks, days, and hours leading up to an event that we believe will test our limits, we can bee nervous. While we may have previously regarded ourselves as equal to the trials that lie ahead, we reach a point at which they near and our anxiety begins to mount. We then bee increasingly worked up, until the moment of truth arrives and we discover that our worry was all for nothing. We are almost always stronger and more capable than we believe ourselves to be. But anxiety is not rational in nature, which means that in most cases we cannot work through it using logic as our only tool. Reason can help us recognize the relative futility of unwarranted worry but, more often than not, we will find more fort in patterns of thought and activity that redirect our attention to practical or engaging matters.

语言是用来交际的,语言也是有声的,这就是语言的本质。学习语言最重要的就是氛围,试听上的刺激与冲击要远远大于文字本身。在作为基础教育的中学英语教学中,对于英语非母语国家的学生来说,英文影视作品的欣赏深受其喜爱,学生在影视所营造的轻松愉悦的学习氛围下,更有利于调动其对英语学习的兴趣,从而激发其强烈的表达欲望。同时,通过影视进行英语听说技能的教学,学生不仅能听到地道纯正的英语,看到真实的现实生活情景,也能提高对英语国家文化的认识,练就地道的英语。因此,把英文影视作品的欣赏作为中学英语教学中的一项重要内容搬进课堂,无疑是对英语教学的有效辅助,会使我们的英语教学形式变得更加灵活多样、丰富多彩。

一、英文影视作品是学生听说能力培养的良好素材

作为交际工具的语言首先是个有声系统,听力是言语交际能力的重要方面,是获得语言感受的最主要途径,是提高读、写、说能力的基础,是语言学习的敲门砖和提高英语交际能力的必备条件。如果没有良好的听力,就没有获取语言信息的物质前提;而具备了较好的听力,就为表达提供源源不断的信息资源,也为交际能力的培养奠定了基础。

由于社会的客观要求,高考指挥棒的导向,在目前的中学英语教学中,普遍较为重视英语笔试,学生对大量的笔试训练习以为常,而对日益重要的听力认识不足、投入不够、方法单一。目前听力教学中通常采取以下三个步骤教学:1)学生听录音;2)回答问题;3)师生核对答案。听力材料仅限于教材中的课文内容及与课文相关的听力材料,学生经常是在答题的压力下上听力课,他们的活动也只是听材料和写答案,形式单调和内容枯燥使得课堂死气沉沉,难以实现师生或学生互动。长此以往,学生就会产生畏惧、烦躁和厌倦情绪。至于口语训练,情况就更糟了。中学教学中听说训练脱节,不符合语言交际的现实,未能从学生交际需要和语言交际功能的高度进行教学,是不可能使学生真正具备交际能力的。

从心理学角度来说,形象信息的记忆比语言文字信息的记忆更深刻,因而有必要针对学习环境和学习者自身特点,改进听力学习方法。而影视作品中丰富的颜色、活动的画面、充实的故事内容配合背景音乐,能充分调动学习者的情趣与积极性,使之更加主动地运用大脑神经进行接收、分析。在学习过程中,参与的感官越多,收集到的信息就越多,融会贯通,所学的知识更牢靠、真实。同时,影视欣赏能做到英语语言教学中最难以做到的——促使学习者说话。在欣赏英文影视的同时,学生会下意识地积累大量潜在的语言信息。而这种信息在今后的某些场合将被激活,如演讲比赛、口语考试和面试采访等,这些的信息将是我们所不能忽视的一笔资源。在我们中学教育中,由于条件所限,大多数的学生从未有过机会真正在交际场合“说”英语。而电影提供了这样仿真的交流语境,学生在欣赏的同时会进行模仿。

电影具有吸引和娱乐观众的功能,能长时间地吸引学习者的注意力。学生在听的同时,教师可以引导学生评论电影内容,抒发自己的感想。学生在谈论他们喜欢的电影时,会不自觉地克服交流过程中的害羞和不安,在这种欲望的驱动下主动去与对方进行沟通,使得听说训练真正融为一体。

二、英文影视欣赏是传统教学手段的有效辅助

自20世纪四五十年代开始,国外就已经引入影视欣赏作为语言教学的一种重要手段,而我国在这方面就相对落后一些。一方面,由于各国经济发展的差异性,对于教育的投入也存在着差别;另一方面则是各国教育理念的差别使得教学中所使用的教学手段有所不同。“三尺讲台”“一支粉笔”这些传统教学的代名词已经不能作为当前信息时代的教育代名词了。更多的多媒体、网络等辅助教学手段的出现,使得课堂从原有的封闭空间变得更加开放与包容,而这些变化也就要求教师及时更新教育理念、不断引入新的教学手段,使教育改革真正地走进课堂,提高教与学的双重效率。

而在中学英语的课堂教学中,传统的以教师为主体,“教师讲—学生听”的“灌输式”教学理念也面临着新的挑战。教育主体的转变成为英语高校课堂目标的基本要求,而要实现这种转变就必须引入新的教学形式。英语学习最佳途径就是使学生置身于英语的情境中。教师在课堂上,一味地强调各种语法、句型,而忽视了学习语言最为重要的因素——语言氛围。英文影视欣赏提供了一种全新的“寓教于乐”的教学形式,就成为传统教育手段的有效辅助。英文影视让形象和语言结合起来是符合人的认识规律和外语学习规律的。正如著名教育学家乌申斯基所说:“没有任何兴趣而被迫进行的学习,会扼杀学习者掌握知识的意愿。”随着影视作品进入课堂,枯燥的课本瞬间变成了美好的视听冲击,改变了以往视听说课内容较枯燥的状况,有效提高了课堂容量,使课堂内容更加充实,引导学生主动学习,激发学生学习的兴趣和热情,从而形成一个良性循环的学习过程,这种新的形式正代表着新课程改革的发展潮流。

三、结语

随着现代教育技术的迅速发展,新的教育技术将进一步深化教育改革,将不断影响教学的手段、过程、内容等。英文影视欣赏就是现代教育技术与外国文学作品相结合并将之运用到中学英语教学中的产物,是英语教学现代化的体现,也是语言教学发展的客观需求。它有利于创设良好的英语交际环境,拓展学生的思维空间,丰富学生的文化意识,提高课堂教学效率,从而最终改变英语学科教学模式,将多层次、多维度地展示英语教学的内容,进一步丰富教学手段,从而提高学生的英语运用水平。

上学期我选择了“英文歌曲欣赏与模仿”的校本课程。英语歌曲欣赏与模仿是所有校本课程中最注重以时代性原则、发展性和拓展性原则以及跨文化交际的思想,让我们不仅仅去了解与歌曲相关的歌手和背景知识,还要试着去了解这些歌曲背后隐藏的文化知识;此外我们感觉这门校本课程的设计方面,让我们在欣赏音乐的同时,可以更好地感知语言、我们语言和应用语言,促进我们听、说、读、写、译各方面能力的提高。英文的文化包括历史地理、风土人情、传统习俗、生活方式、文学艺术、行为规范、价值观念等。而英文歌曲几乎涵盖了文化的各个层面,许多学生又喜爱英文歌曲,如果我们能合理地利用这一点,对于我们学习英语的积极性及学习兴趣都将产生巨大的影响。总体来看,由于主要是歌曲欣赏课和模仿课,学习氛围比较轻松,我们几乎都喜欢这门课,每次老师进入教室时,我们都早已经做好准备,学习积极性极高。但迫于时间压力,每一次只都能聆听几遍,理解并不是十分充分,还是留下些许遗憾。所以我们在一首歌曲的欣赏与模仿中下了很大的力气,例如我们上学期模仿与欣赏的就是:《乡村路带我回家》(Take Me Home Country Road)是由约翰·丹佛,在1971年创作并演唱的著名乡村歌曲。这首歌的歌词写满了作曲作词者对自己家乡的热爱。每一首歌曲不管是英文或中文都可以好好的表达出作词作曲者想准确表达的意境或想法。总之,这门校本课程我很喜欢,希望有机会可以继续学习“英文歌曲欣赏与模仿”。
