许多学者都对道歉这个话题做过研究。J.Holmes对道歉的定义是:道歉是一种言语行为:“当A冒犯了B, 道歉可以用来维护B的面子, 并且弥补冒犯的后果, 进而恢复A与B之间的和谐 (A是道歉者, B是被冒犯者) 。”[1]Olshtain (1984) 从言语行为的角度对道歉进行定义, 认为道歉是一种为受到冒犯的听话者提供支持的言语行为。她将承认有过失和负有责任视为道歉的主要组成部分, 并且增加了自我羞辱的成分。[2]N.Leech对道歉的定义是:道歉是一种言语行为, 即当说话者冒犯了听话者时, 说话者通过道歉来弥补自己的行为, 以此来挽回听话者的面子, 进而恢复自己与听话者之间的平衡的一种言语行为 (说话者为冒犯者, 听话者为被冒犯者) 。[3]

道歉策略的分类是道歉言语行为的组成中必不可少的一部分。Owen, Trosborg, Olshtain等学者都对道歉策略做过研究。对于英语学习者来说, 只有恰当地使用英语中的道歉策略才能更好地与英语本族语者进行交际, 因为我们学习语言的目的就是为了交际。本文以Olshtain在其跨文化言语行为研究项目中对道歉策略的分类作为依据, 对所收集的语料进行分析。其分类如下:1) 适用于任何情况的, 目的明确的直接道歉策略;2) 道歉者主动提出承担责任以安慰受害者的认可应负责任策略;3) 道歉者向受害者解释造成伤害或损失原因的解释说明策略;4) 弥补伤害和冒犯的补偿手段策略;5) 表达愧疚感, 并保证不再犯类似错误的允诺或保证不再犯错策略;6) 使用加强道歉语气的标志词策略;7) 道歉者承认并辩解自己只负部分责任的减轻责任策略;8) 表达对“受害者”的关心策略。[2]

一、调查对象及方法

本文的研究对象共分为3组:即学习者组1、学习者组2和英语本族语者。学习者组1有16名学生, 全部来组西安工业大学外国语言系英语专业本科三年级, 未通过英语专业四级考试 (TEM-4) ;学习者组2有37名学生, 同样全部来自西安工业大学外国语言系英语专业本科三年级, 并且全部通过了英语专业四级考试 (TEM-4) ;英语本族语者为15名来自美国杰克逊州立大学的学生。两组学习者都是来自高校英语专业的本科学生, 入校前都学习了6年英语, 根据他们是否通过TEM-4被认为具有不同的语言水平。

3组调查对象在规定的45分钟时间内完成了含有10个道歉情景的语篇补全测试。问卷是基于Cohen和Olshtain, Blum-Kulka等的问卷的基础上进行修改设计的。

二、调查结果及分析

下表显示出在10种情境中8种策略被选择的百分比——每一种策略在每个情景里可能被选择一次。就是说学习者组1中的16名学生在10种情景里有可能选择160次 (N=160) ;学习者组2中的20名学生可能选择200次 (N=200) ;而英语本族语者可能选择150次 (N=150) 。

从上表可以发现:最受学生欢迎的两种策略是“直接道歉”和“承担责任”。这表明直接道歉策略和承担责任策略的使用更加具有普遍性, 而其他策略的选择则取决于具体的语境。

这3组研究对象在道歉策略的选择上有相同之处也有不同之处。不同之处主要在:英语本族语者和英语学习者在说话者和听话者社会地位权利高低不等的场景中所使用的“解释”“补偿”以及“使用加强道歉预期的标志词”“减轻责任”等策略有所不同。同时, 两组语言水平不同的英语学习者之间也没有特别明显的差别, 相反他们在道歉策略的选择上还体现出了较大的相似性, 这表明学生的语言水平高, 其语用能力未必就强。而且与英语本族语者相比, 英语专业学生在个别情境中没有实施道歉言语行为。

在处理数据的过程中笔者同时发现英语专业学生在某些情境的回答中存在语用语言失误和社会语用失误。例如:在情境3You are a department head (部门主管) .One day you kept a graduate waiting for an hour for a job interview due to an urgent meeting.What would you say?中, 有学生回答“You are patient”或者“You know as a head I am very busy.”等等。而英语本族语者会回答“I’m sorry for keeping you waiting for so long, but I had an urgent meeting”。

例如:在情景10 You promised to buy a gift for your nephew as his birthday present, but you forgot to buy it.When you see your nephew and are asked about the birthday present.What would you say?中, 有学生回答“I forget your present at home.I’ll send it to you next week.”或“Let’s go to the supermarket so that you can choose your favorite one”。而英语本族语者会回答“I’m sorry, I forget to buy it.I will bring your gift to you tomorrow.”

三、调查结果对英语教学的启示

1. 编写教材, 为本科生开设语用学课程

市面上关于语用学的教材为数不少, 但其中大部分适用于研究生阶段的学生使用。学校可依据本校学生的实际情况, 编写语用学教材, 为本科生开设语用学课程。教材的编写中应该尽可能地介绍一些英语中的社会和语用规则, 这样学生在学习过程中就可以更多地了解英语中的社会和文化知识, 这对提高学生的英语交际能力是大有益处的。

2. 为学生提供真实的英语语言环境

在中国这样的汉语大语境下, 要尽可能多地为学生提供真实语境。观看英语原版电影对学生习得语用背景具有重要作用, 原版电影中含有各种各样的言语行为。学生在观看电影的过程中可以直观生动地感受英语本族语者是如何表达某一言语行为的, 这些表达法会潜移默化地渗透到学生的交际中。此外学生还可以利用假期通过“赴美带薪实习”等项目, 到英语国家去实习, 亲身感受中外文化的差异。

3. 为学生提供尽可能多的交际机会

在国内大汉语的背景下, 应多鼓励学生参加英语角、英语沙龙活动;还可以通过网络与英语本族语者进行交流, 如通过Email或语音聊天的形式与英语本族语者就道歉、请求、邀请等言语行为的表达及策略进行交流, 从而提高学生的跨文化语用能力。与此同时, 学校可根据自身学科建设适当增加外教口语课, 并要做到小班教学 (学生人数小于15人) , 这样才能增加每个学生与外教接触的机会。

摘要：本文采用语篇补全测试的方式, 研究了美国杰克逊州立大学的学生和西安工业大学外国语言系本科三年级学生对道歉策略的不同选择。总体上来说, 美国杰克逊州立大学和西安工业大学外国语言系本科三年级学生对于道歉策略的选择未出现明显的差异。文章最后提出了对外语教学的启示。
